Showcasing Creative Talent

Just like athletes, artists fill a critical institutional need. The orchestra needs an oboe; the theater department needs set designers. If you have a talent, you must document it.

The Arts Portfolio

Almost all application portals (Gateway and SAO) allow you to submit an optional Arts Portfolio (often via a platform called "SlideRoom").

Visual Arts (Painting, Photo, Sculpture)

  • Curate: Do not upload everything you've ever drawn. Pick your best 8-12 pieces.

  • Variety vs. Voice: Show technical skill (can you draw a hand?) but also your unique style.

  • Context: Include a brief artist statement explaining your process.

Performing Arts (Music, Theater, Dance)

  • Music: Upload recordings of 2 contrasting pieces (e.g., one slow/lyrical, one fast/technical). Video is better than audio so they can see your posture/technique.

  • Theater: A monologue (dramatic or comedic) under 2 minutes.

  • Dance: A solo performance showing technique and expression.

Contacting Department Heads

Just like athletes contact coaches, artists should contact the Arts Department Chair.

  • The Ask: "I am applying to [School] and am passionate about your jazz ensemble. Would you be willing to listen to my recording?"

  • The Visit: When you visit campus, ask if you can sit in on a rehearsal or meet the conductor.

The "Maker" Portfolio

If you are into Robotics, Coding, or Engineering, this counts as "Arts" in the modern sense.

  • Submit photos of the robot you built.

  • Submit a link to your GitHub repository.

  • Submit a video of your app in action.

The "Hook" Factor

Being "good" at piano isn't enough (there are many good pianists). You need to be "useful."

  • Example: If you play the Bassoon, Viola, or French Horn, you are statistically more valuable to an orchestra than a Flute or Violin player, simply because those instruments are rarer.

  • Strategy: If you play a rare instrument, highlight it heavily!

Caution: The "Talent Only" Applicant

Art conservatories admit based on talent alone. Prep schools do not.

  • You must still meet the academic bar.

  • Your essays must show intellectual curiosity, not just artistic passion.
